I have been amazed and gratified by the enthusiasm shown (worldwide) by
younger people in setting up the virtual orghanisations of the future.
The Globewide Network Academy's president is Joe Wang - a postgraduate in
astrophysics - the first WWW course (C++) was run by Marcus Speh when a
PG at DESY Hamburg (theoretical physics) and the wizard of BioMOO
(Gustavo Glusman) is a PG (mol. biol.) Add to this the GNA's treasurer
(Colman Reilly, Maths PG) and Georg Fuellen (Biocomputing course, VSNS
and Bielefeld PG) and grizzled oldies like me are the exception. Barry
Hardy (PD at Oxford) set up EGC-1 virtual conf on glycoscience...

So you will see that it's very much a thing of the future. HOW
an individual or institution gets there is impossible to say - but you
must trust your own intuition - it won't always be easy. If this list
generates what I call 'virtual critical mass' (and it's shown every signs
of doing so in the last few days) it will be a very valuable resource in
helping to convince Departments of the importance of the WWW.
