The Chemical Information Science channel (CIS, http://f1000research.com/channels/CIS), developed and guest-edited by Juergen Bajorath, is designed to cover the wide spectrum of chemical information science including chemoinformatics and "big data" analysis. All types of F1000Research articles will be considered, except Clinical Practice Articles and Editorials (by invitation only). Submission of research articles, method articles, data notes, and software tool articles is particularly encouraged. Because understanding when or why computational methods do not work and why there might be intrinsic limitations to computational approaches is as important for advancing our understanding as the development of new concepts and methods, such "off-the-beaten-path" contributions are very welcome, for example, as research or method articles.
Particular emphasis is put on high-quality publications that have obvious potential to advance the field. Therefore, the CIS channel is supported by a group of experts forming the channel editorial board: Peter Ertl, Kimito Funatsu, Gerald Maggiora, Georgia McGaughey, Jean-Louis Reymond, Veer Shanmugasundaram, Igor Tetko, Alexandre Varnek, Pat Walters and Wendy Warr. The board initially determines whether or not a submission has the potential to scientifically advance the field. A negative decision by the board precludes publication of a paper in the CIS channel (but not in F1000Research outside the channel) If the initial evaluation is positive, the manuscript will be published in the CIS channel and subjected to open peer review. Board members will help to nominate qualified reviewers. Further details and background information are provided in the editorial introducing the CIS channel (http://f1000research.com/articles/4-35/v1).
