This is (as always) extremely useful.  I will have to think carefully about
whether there is a generic mechanism that we can use effectively. 

The role of the authoring tool is important - at present I am hoping that
most CML files will be formed from medium size chunks, probably converted
on-the-fly from legacy documents.
