Resource Description Format and XML-Data

There certainly seems to be a lot of overlap. One of the problems
of RDF is that the serialization syntax is rather verbose. What
I would like to see is the W3C forming a group to specify XML-Data
in such a way that schemas can define a mapping from compact
XML syntax to RDF data models (and back?).
