C/C++ Parser/Tokenizer

The latest expat has a sample that gets you well on your well on your
way....  It sorta does what you have asked for.  With a little
modification....

Or for expat at http://www.jclark.com/xml - the code is not at all awful,
and it does what you need too. -T.
