XML gets a boost from powerful allies

A group of major software vendors today proposed that the Open Management 
Group adopt XML as the standard for exchanging programming data over the 
Internet.  The proposal, submitted in outline form at an Orlando, Fla., 
meeting of the standards body, targets Extensible Markup Language as the 
cornerstone of an open information interchange model. Under the proposal, 
XML would be used as the standard for exchanging data between tools, 
applications and repositories-a major benefit within team development 
environments. Companies submitting the proposed standard included IBM, 
Unisys Corp., Oracle Corp. and Platinum Technologies Inc. Also joining the 
group was the Distributed Systems Technology Centre, an Australian research 
group comprising the government and private sector. Supporters included 
Select Software Tools Inc., Inline Software and Sybase Inc.  The companies 
will submit an official version of the proposed XML Metadata Interchange 
Format specification during the Open Management Group's July meeting 
in Helsinki.  XML is a standard set by the World Wide Web Consortium for 
defining, validating and sharing document formats on the Web.
