Open standards processes

On Wed 31 Dec 1997 I asked some basic questions about XSL on
the DSSSL List. This was before the formation of the XSL list and 
after Jon Bosak saying that the DSSSL list was a suitable forum
to discuss XSL. I sort of assumed that the XML-SIG style banter
between the core experts and dabblers would be the order of the
day.

Paul Grosso replied to my enquiries with this comment

>As a submission, it [XSL] is only a partial starting point,
>and detailed discussion of it is of very questionable
>utility (and I suspect most of the authors of the submission
>will not find it well worth their time to reply).

Some weeks later Arbortext announced an XSL product.

My point? Any suggestion that the XSL etc. lists are
run along the same "open" lines as XML-SIG is/was seems
rather dubious to me.
