FYI: http://www.allaire.com/developer/wddx is a place where you can find
some information on an alternative approach to data
serialization/deserialization that is not fully object-based.

WDDX stands for Web Distributed Data Exchange, a technology that Allaire is
making freely available to the Web community. WDDX deals with the task of
providing a language and platform neutral structured data exchange mechanism
based on XML 1.0. Current implementations provide support for the ColdFusion
Markup Language, JavaScript, and COM/ASP. Perl and Java implementations are
under development. We have also contacted the PHP and Python communities.
