Compound DTDs

I feel that I must be missing something in this, but could someone explain how or
whether compound documents can nest? When a fragment is embedded and a new DTD is
created to support the structure, wouldn't the namespace of the document then
refer to the newly created compound DTD? If so, you can't then embed the compound
document into another document, can you? If you did, wouldn't you need to obtain
the DTD that was used to create the fragment that was embedded in the first level
of compounding?
