Actually it's easy, just not DIRT easy. HTML Tidy does the
right thing, inserting extra end tags but remembering that
it has done so and then inserting start tags at the first
possible minute so that
<b>foo<i>bar</b>baz</i>
becomes
<b>foo<i>bar></i></b><i>baz</i>
