Prior art: using metadata over a communications link

<< The W3C is surveying potential prior art to assess the claims of
Patent Number: 5862325.
<< they rely on the exchange between publishers and
   subscribers of a file containing metadata (such as an XML file) to
set up
   an active communications link.

In PRACTICAL SGML (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1990), Eric van Herwijnen
discusses SGML for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). In Chapter 13, he
discusses EDIFACT and includes a DTD for a standard commercial invoice.
The chapter 13 bibliography includes the following paper:

B. Robinson, G. Wu, and K. Jeffery. Using SGML for the exchange of the
RG2 grant application form. SERC, 1989.
