managing large collections of XML docs

I've got around 10,000 docs (around 4k to 10k in size) to manage.  I would
like at least some basic version control.  The only thing I can think of
is CVS, but I am reluctant to use that with so many files. 

Anybody using Oracle 8i?  iFS?
