`server parsed' XML?

Or put a javascript module in an XML tag that is embedded in the "main
document"? Some process will have to process the token, regardless.

Have you considered pre-processing
the file using a standard text manipulation
tool?

AWK/Perl/Python spring to mind.
You could also do it with Omnimark.

(In Omnimark you would use the rule:

FIND "&date;"
         OUTPUT DATE
)

I'm a great believer in bolting together
the necessary tools in sequence to solve problems,
rather than using the one tool for everything.

And this is really a flat-file problem, not
an XML problem.
