A data model is essentially a set of data structures, and an algebra
for manipulating them. How they are exposed through an API is largely
and application dependent question, as is the syntax.

Didier replies:
However, the choice of the interface granularity, the members, even the
parameters are still very dependent on the data model. So, there is a high
level of linkage between the data model and the API. It is not as
independent as you seem to believe.
