Alternatives to the W3C

Because they don't all run out of databases.  Many apps (entertainment 
particularly) will thrive in a non-web browser environment and have.  
RealMedia does very well, and while there is a database, it doesn't 
dominate that application.  Getting rid of XHTML and other unnecessary 
objects makes for a very lean and easy to develop/extend framework.

The day of the web browser as portable operating system is drawing to a 
close.
