If SAX == lex, then what == yacc?

A thought that struck me (and probably struck many of you before me) is that
the event stream from a SAX parser is much like the token stream from a lexical
analyser, like 'lex'.  This made me wonder what the equivalent to 'yacc' would
be in this picture; an application that help you construct the logic for dealing
with event streams.  Is there such an application?  I cannot immediately think
of one.  XSLT has some of the features you would expect of such an application,
but because it is designed to be state-free, it isn't the same as a
state-sensitive application like 'yacc'.

Has anyone any suggestions as to which applications may fill this void?  Am I
missing something really obvious?  Please don't pass on your dislike of
yacc/bison, if any (I prefer JavaCC myself, but that is another story).
