Why do XML and OFX have subtle differences?

OFX predates XML, is based on SGML, and uses a form of minimization 
called end-tag omission that was deliberately left out of XML.  A
few months ago, I had heard that the OFX people were thinking seriously
about fixing this so as to be XML-compliant. -T.
