XLINK role attribute for simple links?

Hi Everyone,

I am working my way through the XLink standard (WD 3-Mar-98) and am now
confused about the role attribute.

Under Link semantics the standard you can specify the
role attribute to describe the type of relationship the link describes.
However, it caveats this saying that simple links "have an attribute
called role that has a different function, they cannot have a role
attribute for link semantics."

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find in the specification the
discussion of the role attribute for a simple link. Unless the standard
is talking about the "content-role" attribute but that of course is
a different attribute.

Also, why use the attribute "role" for link semantics and "role" for
Remote resource semantics but then shift gears to "content-role" for
local resource semantics? Wouldn't the role of a remote resource also
be a "content-role"?

One last comment, anyone else get the feeling that there must be a
better way to describe the combinations of legal attributes for the
various types of links?
URLs to tutorials or good papers on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

 - Mike
