And on the subject of the OSI reference model (the ISO layered
protocols)
there is a very interesting book by Carl Malamud, the Internet bigwig.
Apart from laudable recommendations about the Cafe Hernandez in
Sydney, it says that Internet succeeds on what is actually a 4-layer
model:
he raises the question that there can be too much layering
(for reasons of implementations efficiency, chances of bugs in interface
code, etc).

So slicing the pie horizontally is not always the best way!
